Research Project on A Fringe of Leaves

Research Project on Fringe of Leaves

Throughout these three passages is the progression of Ellen Roxburgh, from the civilized to the primitive with Paul White expressing his opinion on the need for a compromise between both these extremes. White also repeatedly demolishes typical stereotypes of black and white society, exploring the faults and benefits of both. Sensuality is another theme encountered within "A Fridge of Leaves", while White disagrees with its oppression, neither does he idealize it. White puts emphasis on his rejection of idealized representations, he prefers to work in the more realistic shade of gray rather than plain black and white.

To Ellen white society is a "settlement in which it seemed at times she might remain permanently imprisoned." She is very conscious of the restrictive nature of this society and senses within herself a need to escape even for a short amount of time. Thus readers get the impression that Ellen is oppressing part of her true persona and only when she is alone with nature can she relax, "when the orderly streets she had abandoned." White re enforces this point by describing Ellen's present home as a "speckless dolls house," these words have negative connotations, a dolls house is sterile in its very perfection, it is but a imaginative plaything, a imitation of life for a child's entertainment, perhaps this is the point that White is trying to make about civilized white society of the time. That it is cold and void of sincere strong emotions, a world of facades, and false images. This idea is further broadened through Ellen, herself. Though Ellen appears in the eyes of others "Lacking entirely in human warmth, and prickly with moral principals...morality itself," readers are aware of her other side, her passionate nature such as her affair with Garnet. In these instances White refers to Ellen by her maiden name, as a symbol of her link with the land as a farmers daughter and the emotional freedom of her former status.

From this restrictive society, Ellen continues her journey to the other extreme, primitive aboriginal society. Within this elemental civilization Ellen experiences a freedom of sorts, when naked "she was entirely liberated." However this extreme is almost too much for her, reminded by her ring, she fashions herself coverings, "until the consequent fringe hanging from the vine allowed her to feel to some extent clothed." This is a continuing theme, in this society she encounters lack of restrictions found in white society, "however in the end she makes a decision to return to civilization." But White does not portray this community as perfect, nor does he endorse the noble savage stereotype. The aboriginals have fleas; they scrounge in the dirt with snouted face(s) and tumid bod(ies) covered with pustular sores. While in history there are many reported incidences of whites maltreating blacks, child stealing, here we see the capture of a woman, manipulated into near slavery. Through these occurrences White demonstrates the similarities between both the societies and thus the lack of a superior.

In the end Ellen reaches a compromise within herself, though she strictly adheres to the conventions of neither society. After re- entering white society Ellen visits a chapel, there was a "communion table, on it none of the conventional ornaments or trappings, but an empty bird's nest." In this symbol is the primitive and the civilized intertwined, it mimics the implication evoked by Ellen's Garnet dress. Though following bare convention within society, she is still expressing her sensuality through the dress of her lover's namesake and the colour of passion. Through this journey, White has demonstrated his opinion that neither extreme is appropriate, that a balance is required. He does this by portraying each society as possessing imperfections and neither being idealized.

White also clarifies sexuality, while still needing an outlet, is not always ideal, and not in all circumstances to be glorified. For example, the pervert with "the gap toothed smile," who chases Ellen, he is an example of her own sensuality, inescapable and yet crude and base. The fact that it is Garnet that rescues her can be interpreted in several ways. The first being that Ellen was trapped by her own sexuality and that Garnet has freed her, or that in these circumstances, the situation between Garnet and Ellen, is merely lust, nothing ideal, not sentimentalized, simply lust.

Paul White conveys his opinions on moderation through the character Ellen Roxburgh and her journey, he shows the middle road as the preferable one through her evident happiness compared to that in both extreme environments. He displays the similarities and faults in both societies to show neither as the more desirable option. White avoids stereotypical clich's wherever possibly to more honestly represent certain emotions or circumstances.

Research Project on Down Syndrome

Research Project on Down Syndrome

Have you ever caught yourself staring at an individual you believed to be retarded or handicapped? Maybe you snickered under your breath when one of them made a funny noise that caught you off guard. I'm sure many of us have been in a situation similar to these and know the guilty feeling you get inside when you react in such a manner to their actions. I think most of our guilt comes from pity and our reactions come from the lack of knowledge on the topic.

People tend to ignore what they do not understand and I'm writing this to hopefully change how some people think. Down syndrome is a condition that can't be physically passed from one person to the next. It is a genetic condition in which there is an extra chromosome in the cells of a baby's body. This extra chromosome results most often from abnormal cell division of the egg before conception. It can also occur in the sperm before conception of a baby or in the fertilized egg after conception. A Down syndrome child will have 47 chromosomes instead of the normal 46. The chromosomal error can be found on chromosome 21, which is why they call it trisomy 21. Why the cells divide in an abnormal way is not known.

Order a custom research project on Down Syndrome now!

Minor cases of Down syndrome may leave a person with different physical features but have such little affect on their thinking process, it's almost unnoticeable. However, there are more severe cases in which an affected person will most likely end up being reliant on someone else for their entire lives. Although Down syndrome has been around for centuries in the human race, no cure has been discovered. Affected people have a wide variety of treatments to cope with the disease and live life as normal as possible.

Another aspect of Down syndrome is mild to moderate mental retardation. Down syndrome is the leading genetic cause of mental retardation in the United States. Special schools can help individuals with the genetic disorder learn basic skills needed in the real world, and physical therapy can help with the reduced muscle tone (hypotonia) that is experienced in most cases.

Doctors have done extensive research on this disease over the years and have made some very important findings that are making life easier for these individuals and the families that take care of them. An amniocentesis can be used to detect any chromosomal abnormality before the baby is even born! Unfortunately, 90% of mothers (or mothers to be) use this knowledge for abortion. In some ways, I feel abortion is an option for those parents that are unsure of their commitment and longing for a child even if the child in not perfect. On the flip side, it is a human life. It is said that one out of every 700 babies will be born with Down syndrome. However, these odds may very depending on the paternal age of the mother. A child born to a woman 25 years of age has approximately a 1 in 1200 chance. A child born to a woman 40 years of age and over has a 1 in 120 chance. Leukemia is also a factor in that Down syndrome patients are more likely to develop the disease than normal people.

Although doctors are still unsure where or how Down syndrome originated, extensive studies have revealed many helpful tips in making these peoples lives as best as possible. Before today's studies, Down syndrome patients were put in mental institutions because people didn't know how to help them. Several heart defects associated with Down syndrome were never diagnosed years ago causing more infants with Down syndrome to die. Now infants are tested with echocardiograms before they are born to help detect the heart defects early so heart surgery can be performed to prolong their life. Today, some of those that are handicapped are living individually and making a good living.

In conclusion to my studies, Down syndrome is a rare, yet present condition that can be found in all parts of the globe. Most people look at the individuals who have the condition and tell themselves how lucky they are to not have to go through what some of them do. From some standpoints, this is true to all of us. But how many people will actually take the time to better understand the situation and actually see what makes them as special as any normal human being. It is human nature to ignore or criticize the unknown, this will always be true to a certain point. Just as the truth will always remain the same in that these people are beautiful human beings that deserve the same respect and rights as anyone else.

Research Project on Islam

Research Project on Islam

It is commonly understood that information shared freely amongst society within the realm of everyday hearsay is at times lacking a strong foundation of truth. Bethania McKenstry, a quotation author, summed this up in one of her works: "I'm not sure I want popular opinion on my side -- I've noticed those with the most opinions often have the fewest facts (1)." Benightedness and opinion in a lot of cases lead to extremely distorted ideas about reality, especially when dealing with a subject that is nearly taboo in a society. A society, however, wouldn't fit the definition if it didn't consist of a certain sense of culture, ideas, and somewhat of a standard conduct. When one chooses not to make any attempt at fitting the mold of the society they interact with, often many conclusions are drawn as to the reason for their choice. An example of this is the ideas that surround women of Islamic faith that are citizens of the United States, most of which dealing with the Hijab, or veil that Muslim women wear on a daily basis (Mustafa 1). It is, however, a complete injustice to the Muslim religion and the women that practice it, to assume that Islam has been forced upon them, or that they practice their religion under any sort of oppression by the men they consider to be the perfect balance to life.

Order a custom research project on Islam now!

It is usually thought that the idea of supposed male supremacy in the religion of Islam stems strictly from the idea of the biological inferiority of women to men. The truth, however, consists of a much more complex period of time and can be found within the rise of urban societies. During these times professional classes consisting of agricultural laborers, merchants, and artisans and simply the idea that it was unheard of for women to perform manual labor, paved the road for an extreme level of subordination of women to men in the developing society. After the Mesopotamia area became somewhat settled, the laws governing family life began to change and created quite harsh living conditions for women of the times. In the beginning of the settlement, there were laws that governed the amount of time that a woman and her children could be pawned for the sake of fulfilling the father or husband's debts, but as the Assyrian rule changed its laws, such regulations were lifted and women and children became virtually at the mercy of fathers and husbands.

Assyrian law also specifically allowed for atrocities to the extent of pulling the hair of women out, deformation of a woman's ears, and beating them with no questions asked. They set forth very strict guidelines as to those who could veil, and those who could not under penalty of extreme physical punishment and humiliation. With the restrictions set forth, it became apparent that the veil of that time was to be worn simply to distinguish the women that were to be considered "respectable" and the women that were not. Not only Assyrian women suffered through periods of development in which they were forced to answer to male dominance. According to "The Status of Women in Islam", an essay written by Jamal A. Badawi, "Athenian women were always minors, subject to some male-to their father, to their brother, or to some of their male kin." India had similar principles in that "subjection was a cardinal principle. (3)" The first step towards liberation came through times of war. Due to the absence of their husbands and fathers, women took on a form of liberation in that they were forced to perform the roles that were once unheard of for women when the men were called to serve their country.

According to Mary Ali and Anjum Ali, the authors of "Women's Liberation through Islam", women's liberation was called for in the seventh century, and contrary to popular belief, was begun by the Prophet Muhammad, not the women themselves. Through the teachings of Muhammad, who can be considered a feminist for his time, Islam came to condemn the harsh conditions that the pre-Islamic times set forth for the women (Fact from Fiction 1). Women found themselves turning to the Quran and the Traditions of the Prophet, Hadith or Sunnah, to establish their rights and duties amongst society. In these works women of Islam can find their human rights, civil rights, social rights, political rights, economic rights, rights as a wife, and duties as a wife(Ali 1-2). The Quran establishes in regard to the human rights of women, that due to the idea that men and women both come from the same essence, that their rights as humans are equal at the time of birth and that neither is more inherently worthy of societal rights. Therefore, the idea of women's physical inferiority to men would not hold any ground for excusing the idea that suffer any inequality when dealing with their moral progression or their accountability towards Allah (Women's Liberation 1-2).

The Quran states: "There is no compulsion in religion. Right has been made distinct from error(Women's Liberation 2)." The civil rights of women are spelled out within the Quran, and establish a basic freedom of choice and expression based on her individual personality.

In dealing with the social rights of women in Islam the seeking of knowledge is mandated in the Quran for both men and women of the Muslim faith, and is set forth in the belief that knowledge and understanding in all aspects of life will help them to maintain good, and demote bad behavior. It is encouraged for women to contribute their knowledge and ideas to the Mosque, but it is preferably done through their husbands. Among other social rights is the right to work outside of the home if she has the skills, and provided the duties as a mother and wife are complete. In Iran 25% of the work force consist of women, and in a place where it was at one point illegal for women to be educated as a form of subordination, 54% of the make-up of college students are women (Beyer 5-6). The duties of wife and mother are a priority in the Islamic lifestyle of women because it is believed that the success of a society is directly affected by a woman's role as a mother and wife. (Women's Liberation 3).

1400 years ago Muslim women were given the right to vote by God. Along with the right to vote, women are also allowed to hold office, and currently many are doing so throughout the world(through islam). The parliament in Syria consists is ran by ten percent women, and in Iraq 19 of 250 members of parliament are women. Many of the ideas about women of Islam and their supposed powerlessness within society come from the United States, a country that has never had a woman as a president, or even vice-president. Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Turkey, all of which are Muslim countries, are, or were at some point ruled by women (Beyer).

Many of the misconceptions about women of Islamic faith surround the sanction of marriage, and women's rights as a wife. In the majority of western cultures, marriage is regarded as a very special rite of passage, one of complete freedom and choice. The misconception about Eastern cultures, however, is that they are forced to marry a man selected for them, and in addition to that, that they are to be a servant to their husband out of obligation to him. This misconception can be cleared up with the reading of information on any family of Muslim belief.

Islam gave women the right to accept or reject a marriage proposal free from pressure, and by mutual agreement to specify in the marriage contract that she has the right to divorce(if she misses that option she has the right to seek court divorce if she deems the marriage to have failed beyond repair).

Also, contrary to popular belief, Islamic women are not required to change their name at the time of marriage(Fact from Fiction). An article from The Institution of Islamic Information and Education explains that when a man marries that he has certain obligations to his wife just as she does to him, but neither role is more extreme than the other. The woman's role consists of watching over the household, in aspects such as promoting good for the children and guarding the material possessions, while the husband is responsible for making the money and providing for the family. With these opposing roles assigned by the Quran, the idea of a Muslim marriage is that the husband and wife's roles compliment each other to make the perfect lifelong combination. According to the prophet Mohammad, "The best of you are the kindest to their wives and I am your best to mine(Fact from Fiction)." Here he promotes the good treatment of women by their husbands, and offers the idea that good treatment of them will gain his approval. He also made the comment that "It is the generous (in character) who is good to women, and it is the wicked who insults them(Status of Women)."

There is a strong importance placed on Marriage because of this and many other reasons. The way that marriage is represented in the Quran and other Muslim works is that it is to take place in an attempt to appease Allah. "And among His signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquility with them, and He has put love and mercy between your hearts. Undoubtedly in these are signs for those who reflect (Rahman)." Marriage and raising a family to follow the teachings of the Muslim religion and to be servants to Allah will in turn promote a good standing with Allah, and the Muslim community. The ultimate praise to women within the Muslim community is given to those who have brought children into the world and raise their families according to the teachings of Allah and the Muslim religion. "Paradise is at the feet of mothers," is a common teaching of the Prophet Muhammad (Status of Women). In truth Islam mandates more for men to marry then for women. "When a man marries, he has fulfilled half of his religion, so let him fear Allah regarding the remaining half." Here the Prophet indicates that without marriage that man cannot complete all aspects of their religion, and that once married that they will be less likely to take part in or think about things that are not of religious purview (Badawi). In a study of Islamic women done by Carol Anway in an attempt to understand her daughter's way of life, she found that the unmarried participants, all of whom were women, felt "that marriage would give them a better position in the Muslim community." Without marriage they felt a loss of power and felt that if they had married that they would have more of say in the decisions of the Mosque by way of their husbands (Anway).

By definition the Hijab is "The headscarf worn by Muslim women sometimes including a veil that covers the face except for the eyes "(Ali Question). The Hijab, however, to those whom do not understand it the word and sight of it can mean confusion. In a religious aspect the Hijab is worn because of the teachings of Allah: "O Prophet, tell your wives and daughters and the believing woman to draw their outer garments around them (when they go out among men). That is better in order that they may be known (to be Muslims) and not annoyed"(Ali Question). This statement represents the idea that women are to cover themselves in an attempt to not be hassled by men, or by any sort of standard they set forth. Ms. Naheed Mustafa, a Canadian born Muslim, says she wears the veil "Because it gives me [her] freedom." In her article Hijab and Muslim Women she explains that she wears the veil to retreat from the societal burdens of image, and sexuality. As a child and teenager she struggled with the idea of fitting in with her peers and attaining a certain look. After dealing with bulimia, she took on the practices of Islam, and found a freedom in wearing the Hijab. Other ideas set forth in the Quran establish that the Hijab is to be worn for the purpose of defending women against the idea that their sexuality might alter or affect the way that they are viewed in society. The Quran calls for women to cover all of themselves with exception of what they have to have uncovered to still function such as their eyes, and sometimes their entire face, but in general it calls for modesty of both men and women believers: "Say to the believing man that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that will make for greater purity for them; and Allah is well acquainted with all that they do. And say to the believing woman that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; and that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands (Quran 24:30-31 Hijab)."

Staring is unacceptable by believers, and the Hijab is meant to guard against such things. Marriage is one way that it is suggested to maintain modesty: "O you young men! Whoever is able to marry should marry, for that will help him to lower his gaze and guard his modesty (Badawi)." It is required by the Muslim religion to marry if a man is having unpure thoughts or his modesty is in question. Many countries, however, mandate the Hijab as a form of oppression, and therefore take away the pride that Muslim women do find in wearing it as a symbol of their belief. Regarding the Hijab in relation to recent issues, the Taliban that once ruled Afghanistan enforced the wearing of the attire in order to create an extreme level of subordination of women almost to the point of non-existence, far beyond those of the pre-Islamic times. In an article by Time Magazine "About Face for Afghan Women", women commented on the fact that with the leaving of the Taliban came a new sort of religious freedom in wearing the Hijab, a freedom they thought they would never see again, just an example of how history repeats itself (3).

The recent events of the United States and possibly many other countries have led to a severe misconception about the lives of Women of Islam. Americans saw nothing but the suppression of the Taliban, a group that suggests they were following the teachings of Allah, but by no means have any true Islamic basis for their actions. Confusion, misrepresentation, and ignorance on the part of non followers of Islam have led to the idea that women, because of their faith, are forced to deal with mistreatment. An unnamed scholar commented this idea: "It is believed that there is no text, old or new, that deals with the humanity of the woman from all aspects with such amazing brevity, eloquence, depth, and originality, as this divine decree"(Status of Women).

Research Project on Sharks

Research Project on Sharks

There are over 300 different types of sharks. But only a few are used for cooking. They include : Blacktip, Bonito, Common Thresher, Mako, Sandbar, Smooth Dogfish, Soupfin, Spiny Dogfish. Shark has no bones. Their body structure is supported by cartilage. Sharks also don't have a swim bladder, which helps fish float. Since cartilage is lighter than bone sharks are able to float. This makes cooking a lot easier for the chef.

Shark is not a common entre at restaurants but is becoming popular to the consumer. Shark has a pinkish flesh just like salmon. The Soupfin shark is used as a gelatin base in a Chinese Soup. The blacktip shark has a white-pinkish flesh with ruby red edges. This is the most popular shark. The Mako looks and taste a lot like swordfish. Spiny and smooth dogfish have the most fatty flesh than other sharks. These are the only sharks that can be used to cook with. Most shark is sold as steaks or filets.

Order a custom research project on Sharks now!

The body of the shark is unique to be a fish. It has no bones and only cartilage to support the body. This makes their bodies more flexible, but also makes the shark a little clumsier. Sharks have 5 fins. The Caudal, 1st and 2nd Dorsal, Anal, Pectoral, and Pelvic. They have 5 to 7 gills unlike most fish who have 1. Some species have gills on top of their head where their ears should be. These are like a baby gill; more active sharks have very tiny ones or none at all. They have several rows of teeth and can grow them back as needed. The teeth are very strong and sharp. The color of the shark is special; it helps keep the shark protected from predators above and below. The shark is defiantly a unique fish.

It is easy to recognize the quality of a shark. Shark can give off a slight ammonia smell. This is ok, but if it is too strong than it has gone bad. Shark will be sold either fresh or frozen. When you buy steaks or filets make sure they look moist and the flesh should be translucent. To store the shark, take it from the package and rinse it off. Fish can go bad when it sits in its own juices. Place it in a shallow pan with crushed ice. Set the steaks on top and wrap. Then set them in a fridge. Shark can be frozen for 3 to 4 months. Some shark is available all year round like Bonito, Mako, and Sandbar. Thresher is popular during April Through August. Blacktip is in season November to April. Shark is not a problem to get. Shark is always caught fresh from the sea and sold at the market. You can find fresh shark only on the east and west coast.

To prepare shark it must be bled soon as it is caught. If it isn't bled then the flesh takes on an ammonia smell. If the shark has a slight smell it can be taken care of by soaking the meat in lemon juice for 30 mins. Cut out any of the dark meat on the steaks or filets. When you cook the shark it is a good idea to keep the skin attached. This helps the meat keep moisture during cooking. Shark can be cooked many ways, but do not overcook it. The shark is done when then flesh becomes opaque and is still moist inside. Some of the ways to cook shark are Baking, Grilling, Broiling, Frying, Poaching, and Steaming. When cooked with nothing but oil a 3.5 oz steak has 130 calories, 21 g of Protein, and 4.5 g of Fat. Shark is an excellent source for Selenium, Magnesium, Vitamin B12, and Niacin. Shark has some health concerns. All fish has signs of mercury in them, some more than others. Shark can have high levels of mercury in them that exceeds the FDA's way from shark, swordfish, and king mackerel. The Mercury can cause the child to be born with some defects. To keep the mercury level down in your body you should eat different variety of fish.

Shark is quickly becoming popular with the average restaurant customer. The great taste and tender flesh makes for a great meal. Even though they are looked at as the predator of the sea, they still can be caught and eaten as well. Sharks are very expensive and can range in price from 15 to 20 dollars per pound. It depends on how much the provider can supply. Shark can soon be seen as a common entre on a menu one day.

Research Project on Finance

Research Project on Finance

Elections have become auctions. The candidate with the most amount of money will win the position, regardless of their qualifications or previous experience. This statement is true for most, if not all elections. There has to be action taken to prevent candidates from "buying" their way into office. Only then will our political system work the way it is supposed to and people will truly care about the government.

The amount of money spent on elections currently is absurd. The federal elections monetarily equated to over $3 billion in 2000, with tens, perhaps hundreds of millions in additional cash spent by interest groups and state and local party organizations. This amount has nearly doubled the 1992 total. Together, the House of Representatives and Senate candidates had spent just under a billion dollars in 2000, which is up 30 percent from 1996. On average, the winning parties spent about $900,000 in 2000; this is nearly double the 1992 figure. A Senate seat cost the average candidate between $7 and $8 million in 2000, up nearly 60 percent from 1996 (TDD pg. 205). As a result of the high price tag on these elections senators interested in serving another term have to raise $5,500 each day they are in office, while House members must raise $1,500 each day (TDD pg. 206). Theoretically, any person that fits the constitutional qualifications is able to run for Congress. However, money has taken over elections so much so that there are now laws of modern finance (TDD pg. 206).

Order a custom research project on Henry Ford now!

There are three laws of campaign finance that govern all funds being used in the electoral process. First, Incumbent members of Congress nearly always receive more money than their challengers. As a result, incumbents usually get reelected. Second, the challengers are able to defeat incumbents only when they raise something close to the totals raised by the incumbent or the incumbent is very unlucky, openly corrupt, or very stupid. While this is rare, it happens often enough to prompt incumbents to defend themselves by raising more and more money. Third, the congressional campaigns that are really unpredictable are the open-seat contests where incumbents have retired. These are usually the most expensive races, and there are more of them than there used to be. The money and the campaign laws are more in control of the elections than the people are or will ever be if things do not change.

The candidates with the most amount money win the elections, regardless of their qualifications or previous experience. In 2000 almost all the elections were won by the bigger spender. After having, won the election the victors must still campaign so they will not be bested in the next election. All the money has to come from somewhere. It comes from corporations, political action committees, organizations, private donations and many other places. Hard money is disclosed and is limited. However, soft money can be given in an unlimited amount and the way the money is spent is often far from clear. Candidates have come up with many ways to acquire soft money. From $100,000 a plate dinners to specialized retreats in which congressional leaders mix policy discussions, golf, and soft money contributions (TDD pg. 217). As spoken about in the discussion, the victors might feel somewhat obligated to those that funded their way into office. In doing so those elected might put the interests of those that donated to their victory, over the interests of the people that elected them.

The practice of buying elections has to be stopped. The sources of where a donation for candidates comes from should be regulated more strictly. As discussed in the debate, corporations and individuals should have a limit on the amount of money they can give. The soft money that makes up most of the funds must be limited like the hard money. This idea is worthy in that it might help to eliminate corruption. In the situation now, soft money can come in an unlimited supply. As a result, a candidate that receives a very generous donation from a corporation or organization might be influenced into doing political favors for that corporation or organization once they get into office. Both candidates should get equal funding so that the better-qualified person for the position will win rather than the better-funded person. In this way power will be given back to the ordinary citizen and not in the hands of the elite as it is now. When the elections ceases to be about which candidate has the bigger campaign bank account and focuses on the issues that affect the normal voters then our political system will work as it should.

The elections are being sold to the highest bidder. Candidates with big bank accounts are pushing out the candidates that stand for the people. The amount of money spent on elections has become ludicrous and unless something is done in the near future the amount of money spent will continue to grow larger and even more preposterous.

Research Project on Philadelphia

Research Project on Philadelphia

Over this summer vacation I had the immense opportunity to visit Philadelphia and Independence Hall. This historical site is certainly important to our early American history for it is where the founding of this country's Constitution was held. There is so much to learn from Independence Hall, and it provides any visitor with the real experience of Philadelphia and America's history. Whether its seeing the Liberty Bell, visiting Benjamin Franklin's grave at Christ's Church Cemetery, or taking the interactive tour of Independence Hall and surrounding historical buildings, Philadelphia is the best place to get a closer look at how our country's government was formed, and learn about the people involved in founding it.

The First historical landmark in Philadelphia that was seen on my visit was the Liberty Bell. It was ordered by the Pennsylvania Assembly In 1751 to commemorate William Penn's 50th anniversary of the 1701 Charter of Privileges which spoke of the rights and freedoms valued by all people in the world. The original Liberty Bell had been through many recastings because of its unpleasant tone, and brittleness susceptible to cracking. They used the bell to call assembly and important announcements and events such as the First Continental Congress, the Stamp Act (1765), and the Sugar Act (1764). It was removed from the city only once when occupied by the British. After the Revolutionary War, it continued to toll for state legislature, voting, and for celebrations, which ended up silencing the bell forever on 1846 when it was rung for Washington's Birthday and the famous crack split the bell. The Liberty Bell is a symbol of American freedom and the obstacles we have conquered as a nation to become as powerful as we are today, and it should stay preserved for generation to come and see this truly powerful piece of our history.

The most ambitious construction of the thirteen colonies was the Pennsylvania State House, better known as Independence Hall today. It has undergone several restorations to return it to its 1776 appearance. It is thought of as the birth place of the United States as it is the location of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, and the debating, drafting, and signing of the US Constitution. Independence Hall's upper floor during the constitutional debates was the meeting place of the Upper House of congress while its main floor served as the Lower House's meeting place. It is well known that during these constitutional debates windows were closed even in the hot summer months and other secretive precautions were taken in order to ensure that the constitution debates would not become publicized. Independence Hall contains invariably important commemorative history about our Country's beginnings, and no true American Historian could know the importance of this building without seeing it for them selves. It is by far one of the most, if not the most relevant landmark of United States History.

Going to Philadelphia to visit its historical sites is a great educational experience, and also gives you the opportunity to appreciate what incredibly challenging feats it took to form this great country. I would certainly recommend anyone interested in United States History to make the effort to visit Philadelphia, being a promisingly worth-while experience. It is apparent that we would preserve a site such as this in order to remember our remarkable history and inspire great minds for generations to come.

Research Project on Immigration

Research Project on Immigration

Ladies and Gentlemen, do you think that immigration is affecting our society? If so, is it affecting it in a bad way? I ask. Whoever can think of a good and mature reason right now, that immigration is traumatically affecting our society in a bad way. Please speak now.

I'm not here to speak against a specific area of immigration, but I am here to discuss some facts of this topic with you so that you may be able to share some thoughts with me. I do not think against immigration at all for I am an immigrant myself, and if I were to say something against that, I would only become a hypocrite. What I say should be on behalf of the Asians I represent.

Australia is a large country. So why not accept a couple of thousand extra people?

Does anyone know how crowded countries such as Japan, Korea and even China is?

Korea and Japan, they have such a small piece of land, yet such an overpopulated country! That is why they build more buildings each day to try and provide an appropriate habitat for each and every citizen. This means that in this process, you lose many of the beautiful places for citizens to enjoy such as nature and historic places, all because of trying to find a good place to build a new home for another person.

That is why the whole immigration process started. They all just wanted a quiet place to live. A not-so-crowded land in which they can dwell.

Immigration was ALWAYS a difficult thing. The government finds it hard to cope with so many people from different countries trying to fit into Australia. Just the statistics for immigrants whom settled during 1998-99 are 46,891. About people from over 150 different countries took out Australian citizenship. The major countries of former nationality or citizenship were Britain, China, Vietnam, India, Philippine, Sri-Lanka and many more. That is an enormous number if you think about it.

In Australia, you wake up to the fresh morning breeze, maybe a large backyard pool. Most places in Asia wouldn't have that. They need to try and conserve as much land as possible. They don't have their own backyard. They live in stuffy 20 storey apartments where it is so utterly expensive. They have no freedom in their own home. They can't even RUN in their own homes because the people living below you will ring you up and complain. That is one of the biggest changes they face when they come to Australia. Practically everyone owns their own piece of land; they can run around in their houses. They can plant those flowers they always wanted to sow. They can also step outside their home in a quiet street and breathe in the clean air as they soak in the sunlight coming down from the blue sky. Immigrants never regret coming to Australia. I surveyed about 36 Korean people; age ranging from 19-30years old on Sunday and only 2 of them said that they really wanted to go back to Korea. Roughly, wouldn't that mean 94.4% of all immigrants would be happy?

Personally, I think this world was created so that everyone can live together in unity. A world where everyone can live as one. Immigration brings us just one step closer to this plan.

Living together with people from many distinct countries can be a difficult issue. There are many different cultures and traditions to accept. This is just one of the complaints that the Anti-immigration Societies would say.

But you must realize, it is also the same for the immigrants. They must also face their new world and blend in with Western cultures. Do you think it would be easy for them? They came here to be free. Then they must learn how to be free.

Honestly speaking, I think governments these days take freedom for granted. The government does not seem to think both ways. Certainly they look at the big picture, but they must also look at the details.

They debate over issues such as "Illegal Immigrants" and also things such as "Immigrants and Drugs".

Ok. Illegal immigrants. Big picture, you see people sneaking out of boats and airplanes hopping onto a new land. You see people smile and slowly unpack their luggage wondering where to go next.

Now I'll mention the details. Why do you think the immigrants smuggled into Australia in the first place. Does it not show their personal life? They wanted to run from something. They wanted to be free. I think immigration should not only be based on what job you have, but what background.

Illegal immigrants should really give you the picture, on how desperate the people were in the first place.

They could be fleeing from a Communist ruled country; they could be trying to escape a war. They just want freedom like the rest of us. So why not give it to them?

Tell me, if you were in a country where war was going on, wouldn't you want to escape from that? Wouldn't you want to at LEAST save your life so that you may be able to live and tell the world the real story? Wouldn't you want to have a meaning to life? Well that is just what these people want.

Immigration is a remedy that helps certain individuals have a second chance at life. Second chance of living in a completely different world. Why do you think our family had moved? I wasn't meant to get personal here! But Asia may seem a pretty cool place to live; yet I have heard from many people, that it has a very high percentage of living with difficulty. Currencies falling, issues happening. Ok. Let's not go there! Just like Australia has its problems, Asia has too. Only, it has more!

Wouldn't we all love to live in a place where it is close to perfect? A place where there is hardly any problems at all? Don't you think Asians are also human too?

For other reasons, immigrants aren't accepted because of their race. This is very rare, but I have heard that it has happened before. They have been kicked out because politics have tried to reinforce anti-immigration laws. Let's put it like this. Just say your family moved into a fantastic new home. After awhile, they suddenly changed laws on payment systems and your family just couldn't follow that. Then they had to be kicked out of their home just because they couldn't understand the new structure properly.

Wouldn't you be infuriated? Wouldn't you feel that way for the rest of your life?

Australia is a big country. I don't see why it has to "create" its problems. They could probably just change some immigration laws so that more people could be accepted here, provided that they MUST do something in return.

I think I pretty much summarize my point with that short sentence.

I have tried to persuade you to keep immigration rules open. Think deeper than the big picture. To look into the details and find out more about what other people may feel before leaping to the negative points. I really hope that I have made some points clear. Now I finish and leave you to think about another issue, only because I think you are mature enough to consider the deeper issues. If Immigration means to be treated like a true citizen, why is there racism? Then why are there outcasts?
Thank you and I hope you have learnt something.
