Research Project on Child Labor

Research Project on Child Labor

In the “Live Free or Stave” essay the author tells her ideas and arguments to persuade the readers to agree with her point of view in the child-labor issue in third world countries. The author wrote this essay especially for the American readers and makes a distinction throughout the whole essay by going back and forth between the third world and the first world situation. She Supports child-labor in third world countries and with argument and persuasion tries to prove that child-labor in third world countries is not inhumane, instead is the best choice out of all the other alternatives left to choose from. The author’s ideas in conjunction with a variety of writing devices put forward a tremendous argument to make the reader understand and analyze the situation of third world countries. She wants to persuade the American readers to think outside the bun instead of evaluating situations of third word countries as if they were happening in the U.S.
To begin with, the author starts talking about a bill that forbids the import of products from factories where child labor was used. She also talks about the work hardships children in third word countries have to go trough. How every time they need to use the bathroom during work hours, fines are imposed on them. She starts this way to present the one side view that many Americans have about child-labor.

She wants the reader to be in complete agreement with her, right from the beginning. After stating her negative ideas about child-labor and making the reader agree with her, she has successfully capture the attention of the reader and she is ready to address the opposition. The author starts talking about how children in third world countries would prefer to go trough the hardships of work instead of not having cloth, shelter or food to eat.

Many Americans see child-labor as a cruel and inhumane act but when you analyze the situation in which these children live; child-labor is indeed the best alternative to take. This is what the author tries to put in plain words, that child-labor is define as a fair or inhumane act depending on the situation of the society where is been perform. Of course, there are several differences between the two situations that could support different moral judgments about them. For one thing children are not physically or mentally suitable for this kind of hard jobs. On the other hand looking at the situation in which those children live, child-labor is better than thieving, prostituting of committing violence to survive.

Analyzing the effectiveness of the text, we find that the author uses a variety of writing devices to influence and persuade the reader. She makes the reader agree with her ideas of why child-labor is helpful in third world countries.

To begin with, the first devise use by the author to capture the attention of the reader is the sarcastic tone used when comparing the third world children to the happy American children. The author talks about the state in which these third world children live and uses strong emotional devices to penetrate the mind and heart of the reader making her ideas more effective. As we continue we encounter negative arguments about child-labor but at the same time the author uses logical arguments that make the reader be more in favor of child-labor. Another device use by the author is her personal experience and the use of famous names like psychologist Abraham Maslow. With an ingenuous use of devices to capture and penetrate the attention of the reader the author is able to express her ideas of why child labor should not be abolish from third word countries.

In conclusion this essay is a helpful tool to clear the blindness of many Americans that never want to look behind the shattered glass, this includes me. Americans need to put more thought into action when ever foreign matters are at hand. Since we live in a country that is free and prosperous we tend to think about foreign matters as if they were happening right at our door step and we rarely analyze the situation in a full spectrum. This research project is a good example of the way we should analyze circumstances in third world countries.

After both sides of the coin have been address then we can make a decision whether the situation violates the human right in accordance to the context of the appointed society. There is no doubt that child-labor is a sad and heart breaking subject but when it comes to choosing from only a few most appalling alternatives child labor is the best choice to support.

With a great use of ideas and writing devices the author is able to take the situation in hand and make the reader understand, analyze and finally opt for her final verdict.
