This issue is more timely than ever as the battle between those who wish to segregate and those who wish to free the slopes heats up. At resorts all around the country, snowboarders are taking an aggressive stance against the prejudicial treatment of snowboarders as a minority. Over the past couple of years, everyone except a handful of central Vermont yuppies and hippies has came to see that these strictly skiing resorts views are about as froward thinking and practical as a single chair lift. Industry giants such as Jake Burton Carpenter and Tom Sims began experimenting with a design about twenty years ago. It looked like a short fat ski and was ridden like a skateboard. Later they added fins for steering, homemade bindings and metal edges. Today, snowboarding is a full-blown sport that is growing greatly every year. Ample publicity, media favors, and the x-games have all done wonders to help the sport. As snowboarding grows so do the thoughts, beliefs and stereotypes about those who are part of a so-called scene. Many skiers believe that most snowboarders just tend to ski out of control, and they cause a lot of accidents.

Some think that snowboarders are boarding in places on the mountains that are out of their ability levels. This is because the number of first time or beginning snowboarders due to the rapid growth. Another reason mountains still are ski only resorts is that a prejudice belief of the crowd that comes with snowboarding. Since it is an up and coming x-treme sport many younger males are taking snowboarding up. (Just as some of society believes all teenagers and male sin their early twenties is only out to party, be load, cause trouble and bring chaos to any area they inhabit.

These stereotypes are carried in the beliefs about snowboarding.) Many mountains were not thrilled of the idea of bringing that scene to their peaceful, relaxing resorts. While many had negative arguments about snowboarding, there were some on the other side steadily trying to promote the sport. As others could argue that snowboarders caused accidents, the same could be said about skiers. The numbers of ski related accidents are actually higher than those of snowboarding related accidents. There are many beginning skiers who are out of control on the mountains and shouldn+втВмтДвt be allowed to ski in certain areas.

Also the stereotype of the snowboard community is as outdated as the past generations beliefs of what life and society should be today. The snowboard community is as diverse as the nation we live in. All ages of people from as young as 4 or 5 to senior citizens are trying snowboarding and finding it to not only be an exciting activity they can do with their family as well as a way to stay fit and enjoy the mountain. Men and women of all shapes and sizes have been trying and picking up snowboarding across the country everyday. The sport is bringing fresh blood to the mountains.

It is bringing a new vibe and more energy to the resorts and towns. As snowboarding rapidly increases so do the minds of the big shots making decisions at the resorts. Their minds open up to the dollar sign. As many resorts realize it is economically viable for them to open up their resorts to snowboarding. Yet snowboarders are faced with a bigger issue. That issue is how we (as a sport) should treat these ski areas that have held off for so long before becoming enlightened. Snowboarders should cater to these resorts at our own convenience, just as these resorts supported us only when it was profitable and convenient.
